And which defenders are you talking about . ? Kos and Mert , or Debuchy and Gibbs/ Monreal who spend more time in front of the forwards and leave the gaps wide at the back . So with Wilshere and Ramsey timing runs just outside the box , Sanchez and Ozil going forward with Welbeck up front. It leaves one player covering both full backs and effectively 3 at the back. No wonder I read a stat that we concede to the first attempt on target in virtually every game . In fact in my opinion Defensive organisation is a priority.

I think the defence is a collective as well - but I want my attacking minded players to concentrate on the front 3rd of the pitch and hurting opponents. There are 7 players and a goalkeeper behind Ozil to defend and he does a good job of getting in shape when the opposition have the ball. I also notice him being very intelligent when defenders have the ball and noticing good times to press. He is alert to chances to turn around and attack. He isn't always great at getting back when the opposition break but maybe he also sees that some of the best breaks come when everyone isn't chasing the ball down and remains high in space confident that the likely outcome is often turnover and transition. I think Ozil has been guilty of losing the ball a bit recently and it has surprised his team-mates so it can often result in opposition breaks. He has also been a bit stuck between Midfield and attack when I think he has more freedom than he is taking. Ramsey especially is excellent at covering forward and wide positions if players come inside more. I think Ozil is some way short of his best form but he has had a knock, played a substantial amount in the Summer and is only one and a bit seasons into a new team and a new league for him....and for that reason I'm cutting him some slack.

Trying doesn't always equal running or tackling like Lee Cattermole.

As I said in my previous post the way we play they don't do it which reflects on Ozil as it did with Podolski and Arshavin before him. Our players are so gung-ho about going forward that they neglect their defensive responsibilities. Ozil's contribution going forward is as good as anybodies but for some reason he is the one copping the blame for not getting back when others have deserted their position. It's a team collective that plays in an unbalanced way and leaves ourselves too open at the back.

To say Ozil makes no effort to defend for the team is wrong.

I disagree. Ozil also works harder off the ball imo. Always busy. Always thinking.

My eyes see the evidence. Letting opposition players waltz past him to receive the ball and get a shot at goal, not facing the player he's supposed to be marking at dead balls, the list is endless.

Really interesting article from AW about his reasoning for selections and positions - especially Ozil. Looks like he is defending his position so we can expect more of the same. Who knows? It might come off and he'll be a genius because of it...or we'll have a couple more losses and he'll have to abandon it? I have seen signs that it can work well but it needs adjusting to have any chance against teams of real quality IMO.

You either build the team round him or you let him leave. There is no doubt that he is a good player but he gives the impression that he doesn't know what he is expected to do.. I think his game is about giving a final ball to player that runs into space but the way we play our passing game cuts down on the space we have available . It's not just him though as we traverse sideways they all get crowded out. We have too many bodies in too smaller space. We need to spread the game and do it quickly taking one or two passes instead of the dozen or so we take now. Players need to run away from him rather than coming to him to get a two yard pass. When this happens we will see a different Ozil totally unlike the one that we see at the moment.

Two views on the world of Özil today. The Mail has him in a gym in full Fly Emerites kit with a very obvious injured leg. German magazines and some newspapers have him pictured dancing in a Las Vegas nightclub after the break up with his girlfriend. Which, if any, do we believe.

This guy may though have serious identity problems.

He'd done fairly well since his return and he's bulked up a bit which will help him massively. He's no winger though.

I know, our full-backs are.
