I read many years ago that Jon Sammels was driven out of the club by the boo boys. Did they actually boo him ?

Jon Sammels a good player who supported Arsenal as a boy. For some reason a section of the crowd had it in for him and he was booed every time he got the ball. Why this happend is a mystery but it drove him out of the Club but he signed for Leicester and had a decent career with them. Strangely enough when he came back to Highbury to play us he was warmly welcomed.

Scored our 3rd goal when we won our first European trophy iirc. Just goes to show how fickle fans can be.

@foys595 He was a scorer of great goals. I recall him putting one past Alex Stepney from a long way out. This thing with Sammels was a mystery to me and is referenced in Fever Pitch when the young version of the main character is told in a cafe to jeer Sammels if he gets the ball. His dad tells him to ignore that as Sammels sees things better than his team mates so seems out of step with them when it's them that can't read the game as well as him. That was always my opinion too. He was in the double squad but rarely played, allegedly due to lack of confidence. After football he became a driving instructor in Leicester.
